Foundation Dyad Program
The Foundation Dyad Program is a 10-week course teaching the practice of the Humanize Dyad, with weekly expert teacher-led webinars combining scientific research, interactive learning, and skills coaching to deepen, refine and enrich the practice.
During the live virtual course, participants are paired each week with a partner from the class for daily 15-minute Dyads on the secure Humanize website platform or on the Humanize mobile app. Two initial orientation sessions of 2.5 hours each introduce the participants to the digital platform and the partner-based practice format before the 8 weekly 90-minutes training sessions.

Diego Hangartner
I completed my studies in pharmacology at the Federal Institute of Technology, (ETH Zurich), specialising in psychopharmacology and addiction.
Following my work with an aid project in Nepal, I lived in Dharamsala, India, for 11 years, learned Tibetan, and studied for 7 years at the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics in the Tibetan language. I have completed several silent, meditation retreats of several months, worked as an interpreter, translating Tibetan into many languages, and published several books. On returning to Europe in 2003, I taught widely, organised large events with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, such as the visits of H.H. to Switzerland (2005) and Hamburg (2007), and participated in research aimed at exploring the benefits of meditation as a long-term practitioner.
I am associated with and have worked for the Mind and Life Institute since the 1990s, as the Mind and Life COO from 2008 – 2012 in the USA, as co-founder of Mind and Life Europe, and as its director until 2014. In 2015, I decided to concentrate on my main passion of teaching content and tools that build mental balance. I founded the “Institute of Mental Balance and Universal Ethics” (IMBUE), an interdisciplinary initiative, to develop and provide tools and programs that foster mental balance. Besides acting as the IMBUE’s Founding Director, I am also the institute’s principal teacher.
Since learning is never finished (and it’s my passion), I keep attending courses, workshops, and participate in collaborations. In the process I’m adding complementary methods such as Co-Active Coaching, Systems Work, Organisational and Leadership Development, Emotional Intelligence and Positive Psychology.

What is a Dyad?

In sociology, a dyad means two individuals maintaining a sociologically significant relationship (Becker and Useem, 1942) and dyads are the foundational units of Humanize. In this way, Humanize is unlike most mainstream contemplative programs which focus on the individual as the foundational unit.
The Humanize Dyad as a contemplative practice was inspired by the Satori process which promotes profound insights through retreats consisting of partner-based interpersonal meditation practices. Dr. Tania Singer then enriched and adapted these intersubjective mental practices with knowledge from psychology and social neurosciences to a skill learning exercise addressing the needs and constraints of our modern everyday lives, associated with the increasing mental health challenges created by technology, economic tensions, existential stress, political upheaval, and a global pandemic.
A Humanize Dyad is a brief, structured, intersubjective daily mindfulness practice, where two people alternate between speaking and listening. It is a container for self-awareness and connection. When both the speaker and the listener are fully present, there is a welcoming space for the range of intra and interpersonal experience to arise. This vulnerability deepens the connection to ourselves and each other. Since the Dyad is a relational practice, it gives us the opportunity to observe our social nature through increasing awareness of the thoughts and conditioning that form the patterns of connection and disconnection.
